Violin Lessons
  • Welcome! I am happy to help you or your child with the richly rewarding study of a stringed instrument. Playing music is fun and satisfying!
  • I will help with all technical and musical aspects, including but not limited to holding the instrument and bow, rhythm, interpretation and phrasing, positions and shifting, vibrato, how to practice, bowings and strokes, scale fingerings, tone production, appropriate style and articulation for each style/period, musicianship and music theory, finger-spacing, and cueing/ensemble skills. I am happy to help you with any style or genre you may choose, including jazz, fiddle, Disney, Harry Potter, movie themes, school or ensemble music, etc.
  • In the summer I have offered a string ensemble, giving students the joy of playing together, the opportunity to learn many ensemble skills, and the experience of playing many different types of music.
  • Students, please wash your hands thoroughly with soap before each lesson. Parents, please make sure that your child does this.
  • Illness: Please do not come to a lesson if you are sick! Call first. (If I am sick, I will either make up the missed lesson, or continue the set of lessons for an additional week.)
  • Performance opportunities: We usually have two recitals per year (three, if you count the summer string ensemble class). These are fun, positive gatherings that provide experience in playing for people. Generally, a student’s family will offer to host a recital in their home, and everyone brings refreshments. Sometimes, if I feel that students need to perform in a non-threatening environment, we’ll have a workshop without parents or audience.
  • I view students as individuals, with different needs, paths, learning styles, and interests. Lessons are tailored to suit each student.
  • I charge for each month of lessons (typically 4-5, but sometimes less because of holidays) in advance, payable at the last lesson of each set of lessons.
  • If you want to switch times, I will furnish you with emails of other students so that you may arrange it. The teacher is not responsible for arranging swaps. I require at least 48 hours’ notice to cancel a lesson, except in cases of sudden, contagious illness or a real emergency. Sending an email plus a voice mail works best.
  • During the summer, when everyone has a different vacation schedule, lessons can be pre-arranged and paid per lesson.
  • Please try to be punctual. Your time is reserved for you, and I cannot cut into another student’s time if you are late.
  • Instruments: Please do not order instruments on the internet, unseen. There are some fine local violin shops from which you may borrow instruments on approval. I consider it a good use of lesson time for us both to play and compare instruments which you are considering purchasing.
  • Students are responsible for bringing their own music, shoulder pad, etc., to each lesson---consistently.
  • I need one month’s notice to discontinue lessons and fill your scheduled spot.
